Monasterboice

Monasterboice is the ruins of an early Christian settlement founded by Saint Buite in the 5th century.

The ruins of two churches from the 14th century stand here along with a round tower. The tower was used as refuge against the Vikings who regularly raided Britain and Ireland.

What makes Monasterboice so famous are its 10th century High Crosses, also known as Celtic Crosses. The cross above is Muiredach's Cross and is considered the finest High Cross in Ireland.

The next is the West Cross, which is the tallest in Ireland, standing at about 6.5 meters. Most High Crosses are adorned with biblical carvings arranged into panels.
