This is the famous West Mountain Sanitarium. It is perhaps the most popular and best known abandoned site in Northeastern Pennsylvania. It is also probably the fastest deteriorating site, and the site most visited by vandals and other reckless visitors that are not very interested in preserving the site. The site has had several fires, and looks very little like it did when it was operating. The land the sanitarium is built on was originally a poor farm. The hospital opened in 1903, and treated tuburculosis patients. In 1932, the hospital was renovated and additions were made, and it remained open until 1974. The hospital was state-of-the art is its heyday, and people came from all over to be treated. The total property was about 175 acres, and included a garden, a school, a playground, and a barn in addition to the hospital buildings. At some point, the hospital was bought by a private party and there was an attempt to convert in into a mansion. However, the project was abandoned. In 1994, a fire burned down most of the main building, leaving only the east and west wings. Another fire occurred in 1996, burning down the superintendent's house. Currently, the remaining buildings include the remains of the main hospital, a foundation, some small wooden structures (which I have been told may have been the gardener's house), and a large house. The house has been referred to as the administration building, the nurse's quarters, and the children's building by many different people and websites.
